Vanessa Hewitt is a junior at Grand Valley State University who hosts her show, Whiplash, every Tuesday from 11 am to 12 pm. Every week, Vanessa chooses a different album to review with listeners. “After each song, I come on the air to share my thoughts, and at the very end of the album, I give it a final rating and pick a favorite and least favorite song.”

 

On Whiplash, Vanessa plays a wide variety of genres that vary each week. It allows the listener to discover something new, as well as herself! She has played bands like The Vents, Spouse, and Bitter: Sweet. Vanessa is not afraid to express her opinion on the music she plays, which is what makes her show authentic. 

 

Other than being a part of Whale Radio, Vanessa also makes her own music. Her sound varies from song to song, but her overall sound is very soft and mellow. Songwriting is what matters most to Vanessa; she has been writing songs since she was 15, and only recently has she transformed her lyrics into songs. “The most therapeutic thing about writing lyrics is knowing I have channeled my emotions into something physical.
